Conclusion

Is the solution to this increased role for race in society, even as it seemingly exists under constant erasure, to be found in relocating the evidence of racial effects onto the social actions of individuals who create and apply these devices? Should the racial assumptions of the alarm use be made obvious? Or should the focus be on making it difficult or impossible to apply the device as a source of racial reproduction? What about those African Americans that are not seemingly punished by these devices in their lives, those who have become rich, powerful, and have accumulated social, economic, and political capital? Does this idea of inclusion, rather than the production of express mechanisms of exclusion and marginalization, disprove this argument for the existence of specific forms of neutral racial devices as surrogates for traditional racial systems of meaning? The answers to these questions can be assessed if consideration is given to another space wherein race is realized in US society.

The next chapter explores those social practices that define race but not through explicit social constructions but instead as a continuous discursive practice. It discusses how this form of social differentiation, which operates parallel to those devices described above, defines new elements to be used to support a bio-politics of race, and how these determine the substantive category of good and bad raced subjects. The chapter begins by looking at the social practices of race in a coffee shop in New Orleans.
